Unexplained Weight Loss - Causes and Evaluation. It seems the whole world is trying to lose weight, yet unexplained weight loss can be frightening. We’ve all heard of someone who lost weight for no reason and it turned out to be something bad. What are some possible causes of weight loss, what questions might your doctor ask, and what can you expect as you and your doctor seek to determine the cause? What Is Unexplained Weight Loss? Unexplained weight loss isdefined as the unintentional loss of at least 1. This would be equivalent to a 2. ![]() Unexplained weight loss: Symptom — Overview covers possible causes of unexplained weight loss. Find out about some of the key signs and symptoms of cancer, including lumps, moles, coughing, bleeding, pain, weight loss and more. Weight loss may occur because you are eating less, or because your body is using nutrients differently due to a change in your metabolism or the growth of a tumor. When to See Your Doctor. If you are losing weight without trying it is important to make an appointment to see your doctor, even if you think there is an explanation for your weight loss. It's important to be your own advocate and continue to ask they question why if you don't feel you have an adequate explanation. Ask for a second opinion if needed. Many of the conditions which can lead to unintentional weight loss are difficult to diagnose in the early stages. Diagnosing Weight Loss That Isn’t Intentional. If you have unintentional weight loss, your doctor will first take a careful history and do a physical exam. Depending on her findings, she may recommend further tests and radiology studies. Questions Your Doctor May Ask. Although some people lose weight during cancer treatment, others gain weight. Slight increases in weight during cancer treatment are generally not a problem. When did you first notice that you were losing weight? How fast have you been losing weight? Have you made any changes in your diet or exercise schedule? Have you ever had weight loss like this before? How upsetting is the weight loss to you? Are you having any other symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, jaundice (a yellowish discoloration of the skin), a persistent cough, hoarseness, thirst, or a sensitivity to cold or heat? How would you describe your general health compared to, say, a year ago? Have you had screening tests recommended for someone your age such as a mammogram or colonoscopy, and what were the results? Have you had any nausea or vomiting? Do you ever make yourself vomit? Have you been constipated or had diarrhea? Have you felt depressed or stressed lately? Do you have any dental problems that pose difficulties with eating? Are there any illnesses that run in your family? Tests Your Doctor May Order. After asking questions and examining you, your doctor may recommend further tests. Some of them include: Lab Tests – Tests commonly ordered include a complete blood count (CBC), electrolytes (metabolic panel), liver tests, kidney function tests, inflammatory tests (sed rate, C- reactive protein), blood sugar (glucose), urinalysis, and thyroid tests. Radiology studies – Such as a CT of your chest or abdomen. Procedures – Such as endoscopy or colonoscopy to evaluate your stomach and colon. Causes of Unexplained Weight Loss. There are many reasons for unexplained weight loss, some serious, and some more of a nuisance. Cancer cachexia is a condition of unintentional weight loss combined with a few other concerns and is directly responsible for around 2. Even with coronary artery disease, it has been found that outcomes were 6. Treatment. The treatment of weight loss that isn’t intentional will depend upon the underlying cause or causes. Given the high likelihood of an underlying cause of the weight loss, anyone who has experienced weight loss without trying should have a thorough history and physical performed, in addition to other needed studies. Some of the causes of unintentional weight loss are fairly uncommon, and this may require several visits to determine a cause. Regardless of the cause, measures should be taken to treat the weight loss as well. When a cause is determined, the weight loss itself is sometimes pushed to the back burner. If this is you, make sure to talk to your doctor about how you should treat this symptom. For those who are diagnosed with cancer, a palliative care consult should be considered. Palliative care teams do an excellent job of addressing concerns not directly related to cancer (for example, chemotherapy or radiation therapy) such as unintentional weight loss. Treatment of weight loss can, in turn, help people tolerate treatments for whatever the condition is that has caused weight loss. Sources: Chen, S. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bluegill - Wikipedia. The bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) is a species of freshwaterfish sometimes referred to as bream, brim, or copper nose. It is a member of the sunfishfamily. Centrarchidae of the order. ![]() Perciformes. It is native to North America and lives in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. It is commonly found east of the Rockies. It usually hides around, and inside, old tree stumps and other underwater structures. It can live in either deep or very shallow water, and will often move back and forth, depending on the time of day or season. ![]() Bluegills also like to find shelter among water plants and in the shade of trees along banks. Bluegills can grow up to 1. They have very distinctive coloring, with deep blue and purple on the face and gill cover, dark olive- colored bands down the side, and a fiery orange to yellow belly. The fish are omnivores and will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. They mostly feed on small aquatic insects and fish. The fish play a key role in the food chain, and are prey for muskies, walleye, trout, bass, herons, kingfishers, snapping turtles, and otters. From millions of real job salary data. The moose (North America) or elk (Eurasia), Alces alces, is the largest extant species in the deer family. Moose are distinguished by the broad, flat (or palmate. The bluegill is the state fish of Illinois. The sides of its head and chin are a dark shade of blue. It usually contains 5–9 vertical bars on the sides of its body, but these stripes are not always distinct. It has a yellowish breast and abdomen, with the breast of the breeding male being a bright orange. They are characterized by their deep, flattened bodies. They have a terminal mouth, ctenoid scales, and a lateral line that is arched upward anteriorly. The largest bluegill ever caught was four pounds, 1. Today they have been introduced to almost everywhere else in North America, and have also been introduced into Europe, South Africa, Zimbabwe. Bluegills have also been found in the Chesapeake Bay, indicating they can tolerate up to 1. In the case of Japan, bluegills were presented to the then- crown prince, Akihito in 1. Richard J. Daley, mayor of Chicago. The prince, in turn, donated the fish to fishery research agencies in Japan from which they escaped, becoming an invasive species which has wreaked havoc with native species, specifically in Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The emperor has since apologized. They prefer water with many aquatic plants, and hide within fallen logs or water weeds. They can often be found around weed beds, where they search for food or spawn. Bluegill try to spend most of their time in water from 6. They enjoy heat, but do not like direct sunlight - they typically live in deeper water, but will linger near the water surface in the morning to stay warm. The adult diet consists of aquatic insect larvae (mayflies, caddisflies, dragonflies), but can also include crayfish, leeches, snails, and other small fish. As bluegill spend a great deal of time near the surface of water, they can also feed on surface bugs. Most bluegills feed during daylight hours, with a feeding peak being observed in the morning and evening (with the major peak occurring in the evening). Bluegill use gill rakers and bands of small teeth to ingest their food. During summer months, bluegills generally consume 3. To capture prey, bluegills use a suction system in which they accelerate water into their mouth. Prey comes in with this water. ![]() ![]() Only a limited amount of water is able to be suctioned, so the fish must get within 1. Herons and otters have also been witnessed. However, the shape of the fish makes them hard to swallow. They use notched caudal fins, soft dorsal fins, body undulations, and pectoral fins to move forward. Having a notched caudal fin allows them to accelerate quickly. The speed of their forward motion depends on the strength of which they abduct or adduct fins. ![]() The flat, slender body of the bluegill lowers water resistance and allows the bluegills to cut effectively through water. The large, flexible pectoral fins allow the fish to decelerate quickly. This superior maneuverability allows the bluegill to forage and escape predators very successfully. Bluegills have a lateral line system, as well as inner ears, that act as receptors for vibration and pressure changes. However, bluegills rely heavily on sight to feed, especially in their foraging. Optimal vision occurs in the daylight hours. The mouth of the bluegill is very small and requires the use of the pharynx to suck in prey. The peak of the spawning season usually occurs in June in waters of 6. The male bluegills arrive first at the mating site. ![]() They will make a spawning bed of six to 1. The males scoop out these beds in gravel or sand. Males tend to be very protective and chase everything away from their nests, especially other male bluegills. Some bluegills, regardless of their small size, will even attack snorkelers if they approach the edge of the nest. As a female approaches, the male will begin circling and making grunting noises. The motion and sound of the males seem to attract the females. Females are very choosy and will usually pick males with larger bodies and . If the female enters the nest, both the male and female will circle each other, with the male expressing very aggressive behavior toward the female. If the female stays, the pair will enter the nest and come to rest in the middle. With the male in an upright posture, the pair will touch bellies, quiver, and spawn. These actions are repeated at irregular intervals several times in a row. Once the spawning is done, the male will chase the female out of the nest and guard the eggs. The male's sperm combines with the female's eggs in the water. Smaller males will often hide in nearby weeds and dart into the nest as they attempt to fertilize the eggs. They then quickly dart away. A small female can produce as few as 1,0. The male continues to watch over the nest until the larvae are able to hatch and swim away on their own. The bluegill generally begins its spawning career at one year of age, but has been found to spawn as early as four months of age under favorable conditions. Many fish reach five to eight years old, and in extreme cases, can live 1. They mostly bite on vibrant colors like orange, yellow, green, or red, chiefly at dawn and dusk. They are noted for seeking out underwater vegetation for cover; their natural diet consists largely of small invertebrates and very small fish. The bluegill itself is also occasionally used as bait for larger game fish species, such as blue catfish, flathead catfish and largemouth bass. ![]() Free ebook: Machiavelli's Laboratory "Ethics taught by an unethical scientist" 12,000 BIOMEDICAL ABBREVIATIONS This page is provided "as is", without warranty of any.![]() Because of their size and the method of cooking them, bluegills are often called panfish. Ceramic Rods, Ceramic Tubes filled with Sand, Ceramic Concave Blocks: Any Far Infrared heat emitter can only be as effective as the Total Surface Area of the heat emitter itself. ![]() Ceramic heat emitters have a very small infrared emission surface! Ceramic heat emitters also have several important shortcomings: SAFETY: In order to produce the proper bandwidth of far infrared energy, ceramic heat emitters must operate at a surface temperature of 4. Fahrenheit . This high surface temperature is not comfortable and is not safe! Most sauna manufacturers using ceramic heaters cover the front of the heaters with a wire mesh or protective face plates, if you inadvertently touch or lean up against the ceramic heat emitter face plate, you’ll wish you hadn’t, as the face plates and wire mesh are minimally efficient and hand, arm, and body burns are still a safety issue. Ceramic emitters get so hot that they have been known to scorch the back rests of saunas. It is virtually impossible to lean back on the backrest directly in front of a ceramic heater due to this high surface temperature. Uncomfortable and not necessarily safe. Metal Face Plates block infrared transmission, further impeding efficiency Nearly all ceramic type heaters use rear reflector trays which distort and weaker proper light wave frequency. ![]() One woman's weight loss blog of everything she's learned during her natural weight loss journey, losing over 170lbs and becoming a trainer and nutritionist. A cost cutting measure which is a definite safety oversight. EMF: An electromagnetic field (also EMF or EMR field) is a physical energy field produced by and surrounding electrically charged objects. Commonly known as 'Flux'. In past few years there has been a growing public concern that long term exposure to high and low- level of electromagnetic radiation (i. Joseph Mercola's website: mercola. The EPA has proposed a safety standard of 1 m. G. Sweden has set a maximum safety limit of 1 m. G. Several of the better quality sauna brand names offer low EMF carbon panel heat emitters and a select one or two brands (including Rocky Mountain Saunas) currently offer Zero Rated EMF ratings for their carbon panel infrared emitters. However, having low or zero rated EMF carbon panels is not necessarily adequate to guarantee your total safety and EMF protection while you are enjoying your sauna sessions. Infrared saunas have a substantial amount of 1. V wiring throughout the wall panels and the roof cap of their saunas. Many of the sauna manufacturers that offer low or zero EMF panels have neglected to properly shield all the wiring in their saunas. Look for a manufacturer, like Rocky Mountain Saunas, who provides special EMF shielded 1. Many ceramic heat emitters contain cement and asbestos. This is an actual manufacturer’s blow up diagram! DURABILITY: Since the ceramic used in most infrared heat emitters is generally of poor quality, lumpy deposits of impurities are often produced on the tube itself. These deposits cause the ceramic emitter to decay rapidly and become inefficient over time. Most ceramic emitters have a short life expectancy. With the small surface area of ceramic emitters and the wide spacing between the emitters, Hot spots and cold spots throughout the sauna cabin are the inevitable result . Portable wooden . Most portable backrests slip out of position when leaning on them and only work in the upright position, which limits the variety of leaning positions. In my view, curved Portable Backrests are NOT “Ergonomic”. For instance, if I am a 5'1. These 1. 7” tube heaters are generally mounted vertically between the inner and outer wall of the sauna. Since the tubular ceramic heat emitter produces infrared energy across its entire surface, almost half of the infrared energy from a ceramic emitter is directed toward the outside wall, away from your body. Lots of wasted infrared energy. In an attempt to correct the tubular ceramic emitter design flaw, nearly all ceramic heat emitters employ the use of Reflector Trays mounted behind the tubes. This only creates another problem! Reflected infrared light waves from the tray surface collide with the newly emitted rays from the ceramic tube effectively blocking infrared emission to the sauna user's body. Reflector trays are cheaply manufactured and have many surface area scratches and blemishes. Scratches and cheap surface coatings further distort the desired infrared wavelength emission. The short length (1. I feel that it is very important to cover the entire body with infrared heat, from head to toe, as evenly as possible, during a full sauna session. There are no tubular ceramic floor/foot heaters. A major design problem, since it is important to heat the feet to expel toxins and lactic acid buildup, soothe nerve endings located in the bottom of the feet and relieve joint related pain. Ceramic plate foot heaters are safer, but typically have a low infrared output. Prevalent for more than 2. Ceramic Heat Emitters represent the Old Infrared Technology. However, nearly all far infrared sauna manufacturers still offer them for one primary reason. Ceramic heat emitters are much cheaper to manufacture than large high- tech carbon heater panels. In my opinion, far infrared ceramic heat emitters, of any description, are NOT Safe, Comfortable, Durable or Efficient. What to Look For. Carbon Heater Panels in a Rocky Mountain Sauna model. Organic Nano- Carbon. Nano- Carbon heater panels are 9. This frequency of light energy wave is precisely tuned to perfectly match the maximum infrared absorption level of the human body. Carbon panel heat is warm, gentle and soothing. Most people comment that they are starting to feel relaxed, right away. You can lean right up against properly spaced vertical backrests in Safety and Comfort. Carbon Floor & Leg Heater Panels standard in all Rocky Mountain Sauna models. Look for a quality far infrared sauna to surround you with large wall- mounted heating panels, including rear, side and front panels, with expansive lower leg and floor panels. Large infrared heater surface areas produce maximum far infrared emissions which directly results in a greater infrared energy absorption by the body. With the massive far infrared emission flowing from these large carbon panels, mounted in every wall and floor, you receive an even, effective infrared exposure over your entire body, regardless of how you are positioned in the sauna. The organic Nano- Carbon. For more details on nano- carbon heater panel construction, operation and efficiency,CLICK HEREMistake #2: Poor Wiring Safety What to Avoid. Most cheap saunas have cheap wiring configurations; thin gauge wires which are poorly insulated and improperly shielded for EMF. Light gauge wiring with thin insulation does not hold up well over time. Excessive heat from the conductive wire dries and cracks the insulation and exposed wires are definitely a safety issue. Further, some inexpensive saunas often have an unenclosed central processing unit, power converters, junction blocks and circuit board relays. Excess heat from unenclosed electrical components can dry out the wood in the roof cap and is contrary to standard electrical safety codes. What to Look For. Proper EMF Wire Shielding protects the sauna user from stray flux radiation and prevents wiring from coming into direct contact with wood (fire hazard). Look for all major electronic components to be enclosed in a safe metal housing. Every heating panel should also be equipped with both an electrical fault sensor and thermostat to cut off power in the event of a malfunctioning or overheating panel. Your Safety is a prime consideration at Rocky Mountain Saunas. All electrical wiring is the proper gauge with heavy duty insulation. All high potential electrical wiring is encased in reflective metal flex conduit covered by insulation and is certified EMF shielded. Junction terminals and all primary electrical components are encased in a sturdy steel housing. Two individual thermostats/Safety Sensors, connected to each heating panel, are designed to shut off the individual panel in the event of electrical overload or high voltage fluctuations. Our stringent safety precautions are documented and verified by Four Internationally Accredited, Independent Testing Laboratories. Such saunas may be dangerous to use and/or utilize toxic chemicals in their production. What to Look For. |
